Type of GovernmentThe City's government is led by a five-member elected Council, which sets policy and determines the longterm vision for the City. The Council appoints a City Manager to handle the daily business affairs and a City Attorney to provide legal advice.The Mayor is elected at-large in a citywide election and can live anywhere in the City, however, the other four Council members must live in the district they represent. All Port St. Lucie voters are entitled to vote in each district race, and various boards serve to provide input to the Council in an advisory capacity.The Mayor and Council members serve four-year terms. The District 1, District three and Mayoral seat will be up for election in 2014. The next election for District two and District four is scheduled for 2016. When Spain owned Florida, they called a large area on the eastern coast â??Santa Lucia,â? which is Spanish for Saint Lucie. In the early 1900s, St. Lucie County took its name from the original Spanish name, and in April 1961 the City of Port St. Lucie incorporated. At the time, General Development Corporation owned vast amounts of the land in the City, which they sectioned into thousands of residential lots and sold to investors in America's Northeast and Midwest.
